How do you remove the smell of something dead from your home?

It may be mice, rats, but more likely I hope it's a dead bird in an unused chimney and it's not very nice. Don't know if it has seeped through to neighbours yet. Maybe they are murderers. One is a policewoman - good cover up maybe........|||You need to follow your nose and find the stench to remove it..it actually could be a rotten potato..they smell nasty if rotting. I hope it is not something within your walls that has died..it can take up to a month for the smell to disappear. Good luck. Nothing will cover up a dead mouse smell.|||You need to remove the offending dead item, remove any detritus and then disinfect the area. A bit of ventilation and it should be ok. If you find the smell still lingers pop the top off of a can of oil based (gloss) paint and leave the open can in the room where the odour is coming from for 24 hours.|||A former landlady of mine successfully cleared an apartment by burning huge amounts of incense in it. After airing it for several days, it was fine. Then I read that 'real' incense destroys odor and does not mask it. Might be worth a try.|||Remove the dead thing, ventilate and disinfect as answerer above said or bleach.|||remove the offending item.|||USE fabreeze mixed with perfume... does the trick so well
